Hoi An's old town is easiest to appreciate on foot, ideally arriving before nine in the morning while the streets are still quiet and the light is soft on the yellow facades. The Japanese Covered Bridge and a handful of preserved merchant houses along Tran Phu Street are open to visitors for a shared entrance ticket.
Return after dark on the fourteenth day of the lunar month, when the town switches off electric lighting for the monthly lantern festival and the river fills with floating paper lanterns. Any other evening still offers lantern-lit streets, just with normal street lighting alongside them.
